Students' Perceptions towards their Teachers' Behaviour

Ethics in teaching still remain an important concern regardless of the fast changing technologies in the world of teaching and learning. A study was conducted to explore university students’ perception of their lecturers’ ethical behaviours in the process of teaching. A total of 387 students from six faculties in a public university in Malaysia made up the respondents. A questionnaire consisting of general statements pertaining to work ethics of lecturers were administered to the respondents. All of the questions were structured and open-ended. The respondents were also asked whether such behaviours were observed in their classrooms. The findings indicate that students do have specific opinion on what ethical and unethical behaviours of teaching are. Almost all students stated that lecturers are unethical when they do not make an effort to improve their teaching, do not update their teaching materials, cancel their classes without prior notice or change planned class schedules. Other unethical behaviours reported are, lecturers do not replace missed classes due to public holidays, meetings or for personal reasons. These also include those who replaced their classes intensively but did not cover the entire syllabus. Seventy percent of the respondents said that lecturers are also considered unethical when they are unavailable outside lecture hours or assign junior lecturers to replace them. Almost half of the respondents reported that these behaviours are practiced by their lecturers in their classrooms. These findings suggest that lecturers need to be aware of their weaknesses and be sensitive to their responsibilities as lecturers and be true to their profession in the sense that they are able to judge these unethical issues in teaching.
