Challenges Facing a Senior Tutor to Encourage Deep Learning in the Dynamic Environment of Higher Education

Jean Mollett, Jenny Hadingham.

In South Africa the trend has long been towards an increasing diversity in the student population, because of political pressure to widen access to groups previously excluded from higher education. This in turn has led to increasing numbers of un(der)-prepared students entering Universities and technikons. . From experience in the School of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of the Witwatersrand, it has been found that students struggle with courses that involve understanding and applying concepts in Genetics. Consequently, new teaching methodologies have been adopted in order to support these students academically. The strategies used to teach the diverse student population in Genetics will be described, focusing specifically on teaching innovations and course design. These include an examination of the changing role of lecturers in higher education in terms of which lecturers have been forced to acknowledge that they are not just transmitters of information, but rather teachers, implying a focus on students’ learning needs. The object of these strategies is to make the student responsible for his or her own learning and the lecturer accountable for his or her teaching through participation and interaction. Student responses to these different strategies will also be discussed in order to provide a comprehensive overview of their successes and failures.
