The Changing Facets of Higher Education: UNITAR’s Teaching & Learning Model

Hadzariah Ismail, Roziana Ibrahim.

E-learning is the way to go in the education industry all around the world. Different learning institutions uphold different teaching and learning (T&L) model hence, there is no one model that is “bible”. Implementation of e-learning initiatives needs to be tailored to the region’s needs, market demands, education policies and laws. Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), the first virtual university in Malaysia has been down this road for the past 5 years. UNITAR embraces a hybrid model, which combine both conventional, and virtual T&L practices. Some good practices in conventional T&L such as face-to-face meetings and examinations are retained to promote “human touch”. While the “virtualness” is exercised through effective uses of communication technologies which have been integrated into a custom-made interactive application known as Virtual Online Instructional Support System (VOISS), CD and Web-based courseware, Online Tutorial, Virtual Library and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). This paper will describe the UNITAR’s T&L model and practices. The scope of the discussion will be based on the course Algorithms and Data Structures. The paper will reveal how UNITAR’s T&L model is workable and doable within the course and still meets with the country’s needs and aspirations.
