Blending Theory, Practice and Assessment in a Real-World Model of Teacher Education

Dr Elaine Stotko, Dr Teresa T. Field, Dr Angelique Renee Arrington, Dr Mary Ellen Beatty-O'Ferrrall.

This paper presents information and preliminary research findings on a graduate-level teacher preparation program that, through collaborative partnership arrangements with local school districts, permits students to be classroom teachers in urban and urbanizing schools while they simultaneously complete their university studies for licensure. Because students are teachers during the day, the curriculum of the program draws heavily from their daily experiences, allowing for 'real world learning' experiences and a true blending of theory and practice through critical reflection on teaching and learning. An infrastructure of support and feedback through on-site mentoring and university supervision offers students opportunities to implement suggestions about professional practice on a daily basis. Assessment begins with entrance to the program, as faculty and students explore students' dispositions toward teaching and learning. These assessments continue throughout the program in both formal and informal ways, including the development and presentation of an electronic portfolio, which serves to document the student's educational philosophy, reflections on the teaching experience and performance of standard-based instruction.
