Ensuring Teacher Quality:: A Focus on Professional Learning

Diane Mayer.

This paper critically analyses the current Australian policy and research context in relation to developing quality teachers for all students. As in many other countries, many parts of Australia are focussing on the development of professional standards and evaluation of teachers against those standards, as mechanisms for ensuring quality teachers. The paper proposes a focus on teacher learning as the key to building teacher quality, and explores how teachers can use professional standards to facilitate their personal reflections and professional conversations, to suggest professional development goals and ways of achieving those goals, and to provide a framework for evidencing their professional learning.
