Out-of-country experiences in the International Business curriculum: a case for the successful integration of languages.

Laura Ancilli, Laura Bregu Hougaz.

The question of teaching a foreign language within an International Business curriculum has been discussed and considered over the last four-five years, even though the internationalization of the business education curriculum has been debated for more than two decades. The School of Business at Swinburne University of Technology, in Australia, is a forerunner in complementing the business course it offers with languages (Italian and Japanese) in a Double Degree formula that not only teaches languages through the more traditional topics such as literature, politics and history of the country, but also includes new interdisciplinary areas of study such as courses on the Italian economy, Italy’s role within the EU and the Business language of Italy. The present paper will outline the latest development within Swinburne’s business/language program: a summer study abroad program during which 40 students have had the opportunity to undertake the study of their subjects in Treviso, Italy over a period of four weeks with their own lecturers, fully immersed in the Italian speaking community of one of the richest and most industrially dynamic cities in Italy and Europe. The results of the program conducted last year, which was closely monitored, will be presented in the paper.
