Helping Students Become Better Teachers Through Explicit Instruction on the Nature of Science

The central purpose of this study is to improve preservice teachers’ views on science teaching through explicit instruction of the nature of science. This project entailed a complete redesign of an Elementary Science Methods course at the University of Victoria to include explicit instruction regarding the nature of science and its consequent application in elementary school settings.

Dr. Black is a science education professor at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia where she focuses her research efforts on improving science education for all levels of education. Dr. Black’s current research projects include investigating student understanding of the Nature of Science to increase Scientific Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction in Science, Reading and Writing in Science, and the needs of adolescent youth in foster care.
