Accommodation, Change and Growth: Implementing Computer Technology into Existing Courses at a Faculty of Education

In the 2000-2001 school year, the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, embarked upon an ambitious new Mobile Computing Program, which would eventually see all Bachelor of Education students using laptop computers for a variety of applications. After a one year pilot in which approximately 40 Junior/Intermediate teacher candidates were provided with laptop computers, the 2002 – 2003 year moved to a full implementation, with 280 Junior/Intermediate teacher candidates using laptop computers in their classes and during the practice teaching placements. During this same academic year, the Primary/Junior program moved into a pilot period, with 40 students using laptops and with plans to move to a full implementation in 2003-2004.

All faculty members were encouraged to consider ways in which teaching and learning opportunities using computer technology could be incorporated into existing courses. This required a shift in thinking about both the courses that they taught and the way in which the students, the teacher candidates, learned. The year was a time of change and growth for not only the teacher candidates but for faculty members, as well.

This paper will explore and discuss the change process a professor of teaching methodology, a professor mathematics methodology and a student teacher experienced. It will also explore and discuss a student teacher’s perspective of the impact of these changes on her developing teaching practices. Using postmodern views of teaching and learning and Fullan's (1984, 2000) theory of change as a basis for discussing the accommodation, change and growth processes, the professors will address the changes in implementation of their courses as well as the changes in their beliefs about teaching and learning processes as a result of participating in this program. In addition, the paper will highlight the benefits and challenges of making these changes in their teaching for both their students, the teacher candidates, for the professors and for the faculty’s teacher education program.

Over the past thirty years Dr. Langford has worked in education in a variety of roles in elementary and secondary schools nationally and internationally as well as in several Canadian universities. She has taught Language Arts, Education in the Early Years, and Early Childhood Education at The University of Western Ontario. Presently, she is teaching Curriculum Methods at Nipissing University. She has been involved in teacher development research sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of College and Universities, McGill University, the Commision des ecoles catholiques de Montreal and by Nipissing University. Her current research is focused on the integration of information technology in teacher education as well as literacy development in first and second languages with special interest in the early years of development and teacher development.

Susan Stuart, B.A., B.Ed., M.A. (Education)
Assistant Professor at Nipissing University Faculty of Education teaches Mathematics Methodology. Research studies include pre-service teachers dispositions towards mathematics and mathematics teaching, and the effects of the integration of computer technology on teaching methodology. She has authored mathematics methodology and elementary specialist courses, as well as web-based courses for classroom teachers. Professor Stuart is author of a number of mathematics teaching and assessment resources and involved in mathematics curriculum develop in Ontario.
