Schooling Improvement: Making a Difference?

Schooling Improvement Initiatives in New Zealand are about significantly improved student achievement through sustainable school improvement. This paper presents a case study of Schools Making a Difference (SMAD), one of a large number of Schooling Improvement Initiatives currently operating in New Zealand. The paper reviews research into schooling improvement, how the research relates to SMAD and the lessons learnt about schooling improvement as a result of the initiative.

Dr Baldwin is a Schooling Improvement Officer and Planning and Reporting Officer with the Ministry of Education in New Zealand. She has a special interest in effective teaching and learning as a tool in improving educational outcomes for students at all levels of compulsory education.
