An Empty Throne: New Opportunities for Reconsidering the Role of Theology in Higher Education

Dr Madge Karecki.

Spirituality is one of the fastest growing areas of interest among people today. This seems to be a tangible sign of a need people have to reflect on the deeper issues of life, but seems to be in conflict with the current view of the role of theology in higher education. Theology, once hailed as Queen of the Sciences has been displaced from her throne and is perceived as irrelevant. This paper explores some of the reasons for theology's fall from grace and critically examines the value of contextual theology and its role in helping people make more authentic and integrated responses to the issues and challenges facing them in contemporary society. Three modules being taught in the Department of Missiology at the University of South Africa serve as the springboard for this presentation.
