Do Learning Games Improve Grades? : A 2-Year Campus-wide Study

1. Objectives and purposes: To assess if Flash learning games help improve learning and grades among students at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

2. Significance of the study: If Flash learning games have a significant impact on student learning and grades, it will enhance the possibility to be included in a campus-wide courseware design model as well as adopted by the University of Minnesota system. It may also encourage collaboration and partnerships with major publishers to include learning games among the texts used by educators within the University of Minnesota.

3. Perspective(s) or theoretical framework: The integration of Flash learning games is a part of the constructivist learning approach used in web-based learning courseware design. The learning games were designed to foster the environment of "Learning by doing and experience" for web-based learning.

4. Methods and Data sources: Data would be collected through a campus-wide web survey of the impact of technology and learning games on learning and grades in 2002 and 2003. Other data would also come from selected educators who implemented assessment of learning games within individual WebCT course sites.

Dr. Dan Lim is the Assistant Professor of Information Technology Management and the Director of Instructional Technology Center at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. A certified instructional designer, he is a frequent presenter and speaker at national and international technology conferences in North America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and South America.
He has published in the areas of paperless learning, constructivist
learning, interactive learning games, technology cultural change, and ubiquitous laptop computing. His most recent research and development is the creation of an academic gaming portal where educators from around the world can create Flash learning games. He has taught computer courses at the University of Minnesota, Crookston and instructional design graduate courses at University of North Dakota.
