Building up a Hybrid Learning Environment: A Pilot Methodology for Teaching the Course 'Distance Learning' at the University of Crete

The educational process is presented as the most important tool in the context of transformation towards the Information Society. The introduction of information and communication technologies into education significantly changes the structure and operation of education as it has been until now. The main characteristics of the new educational environment, focus on the process of open, distance learning via synchronous communications, multimedia and on life long learning. The hybrid-learning environment is a conceptual and functional integration of traditional educational methods and new instructional technologies. The classroom ceases to be the principal place where knowledge is transferred from the teacher-transmitter to the student-receiver, and is transformed into an open and creative place for discussion, pursuit and combination of different scientific approaches and views. In this paper we present the most important steps for the establishment of a hybrid-learning environment at a pilot course level, in the Department of Education at the University of Crete, during fall semester 2002.

Dr P.Anastasiades has been Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and informatics at the Polytechnic School of The University of Patras (1999-2002) , and also Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus (2000-2002). He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Crete. His research interests include Social & Educational Informatics, Life Long and Distance Learning, Information Society Theories, Information Systems & New Economy.
