The Multidimensional Nature of Young People's Lives.

Debra Tyler and Helen Stokes

Youth Research Centre, University of Melbourne, Australia

  Abstract:

The findings from two research projects- The Out of Education Project, commissioned by the Victorian Full Service Schools Program and the Life Patterns Project, funded by the Australian Research Council will be used as the basis for discussion in this workshop. The first project focuses upon young people who are deemed "at risk" of disengaging from the schooling process, while the second, a longitudinal study has concentrated on the issue of transition from school to work for young people since 1991. Both projects highlight the need for educational institutions to cater more fully for the multi-dimensional nature of these young people's lives. Clearly there are implications for schools if current assumptions about the needs of young people are challenged.
