  Abstract:

The three new publications in this new "Gender Communication Series" will be launched in this workshop. Participants will be invited to discuss the 12 sets of literacy and numeracy learning resources after a general introduction, history of the project and theory underlying the series is presented. The three publications focus on a national survey of the educational needs of women in adult literacy and numeracy programs in Australia, and the recommended curriculum and professional development materials to fit these needs. The three publications "Making a Difference," "Gender Language and Power Learning Resources" and "Gender Language and Power: A Trainers Guide" were the outcome of a national ANTA project which ran from 1995-1997 at Open Channel Film studios in Melbourne. The gender learning resources support and develop learning outcomes through narratives and associated curricula activities and support the delivery of the widely used Certificate of Adult General Education .The third book in the series includes notes and activities for teachers re the use of the learning resources.

There is also a comprehensive analysis of theoretical issues and resources to assist teachers in using these texts. The texts include masculinities and emotional literacy development and activities and information on teaching feminisms.

The workshop will explore some materials for discussion which will take place in small groups in the second half of the session The small group discussions will encourage participants to explore the applicability of the learning resources to their own individual training environments.
