Until now there has not been much research into the business acumen of arts practitioners. The arts industry is known for its high rate of small business failures.

This paper presents findings obtained through an inquiry into the small business practices of artists and designers. Research has shown that small business practitioners can and do learn from their own experiences and the experiences of other practitioners. The data and information collected identifies and assesses the sort of business skills required by arts practitioners. Further, the study determines the attributes needed for operating a successful small business.

The presentation of this paper is intended to invite further discussion and canvass the opinions of others.
