In recent years the importance of context in development has been examined as well as the significance of joint attention and joint accomplishment in learning. The importance of infancy has been once again highlighted with the present debates about the meanings and implications of brain research.

This paper looks at infancy, how early experiences support the development of multiple literacies and how child rearing contexts can support this development.
