'Deadly eh, Cuz! Teaching Speakers of Koorie English'

Rosemary McKenry and Geraldine Atkinson

Goulburn Valley Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, Victoria, Australia

  Abstract:

This workshop is based on a published Australian professional development course for primary and secondary teachers. (Languages Australia, 1998) It is the result of action research in which eight schools participated over one year. The word 'Koorie' is specific to one area of Australia but the process is transferable to other places throughout the world. The workshop will introduce participants to Aboriginal English and examine practical classroom strategies. It aims to help students achieve control and choice of the language they use, according to audience and purpose. In this way they retain their cultural identity while developing Standard English skills. The presenters model a partnership between Koorie and non-Koorie educators. Geraldine Atkinson, the initiator of the course, is from the. Rosemary McKenry is an education consultant and the writer of the course.
