New Literacies for New Persons in the New Times Abstract The rapid social, economical and cultural changes including the rapid growth in technology use in the world today demand new forms of literacies among the work-force. At this juncture, it is crucial that new forms of literacy that not only emphasise social purpose and context as given but also subject them to critical analysis. As Malaysia is heading towards a knowledge-based economy and society, there is a need to examine new literacies that are essential for the workplace as well as for social and intellectual advancement where the Malaysia people would assertively participate in local and global development. This paper reports the findings of a study that examines the literacy practices that are demanded by the workplace and the literacy practices that are being promoted in schools. It reveals the mismatch in the contemporary scenario and assesses some of the ways in which the gaps could be bridged. Bionote Dr. Ambigapathy Pandian is an associate Professor and Joint Director, International Literacy Research Unit at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang Malaysia. Dr. Pandian has been the Chairman of the National and International Literacy Conferences organised in Penang, Malaysia. He has researched and published books and articles on English and Malay Literacy in Malaysia. Currently Dr. Pandian is researching and co-authoring a book on Global Englishes with staffs from RMIT, Melbourne, Australia. He is a serving member of the Tamil School Committee in the Penang Education Consultative Council.
