The Role of Inservice Professional Training

Abstract

As a result of major changes in the structure and methodologies of the South-African Education system, teachers seem to experience problems in implementing these changes. The different Provincial Education Departments did some training regarding the new approach, but the changes were so major that it was impossible to train all educators sufficiently through the ordinary curriculum support services of the Departments. As a result of this the some of the Education Departments decided to provide in service training (INSET) to address these problems. The decision was made to contract it's Teacher Education Institutes to help with INSET training. INSET strategies for the improvement of the quality of teaching are likely to succeed to the extent that they are coupled with and form part of wider strategies to bring about improvement in: conditions under which educators work; provision of education generally and total socio-economic transformation.
