Genres in Hypermedia: What are they? What do they look like?

Abstract

Multimedia in electronic or digital form can be termed hypermedia. This represents the form of the text, ie hypertext, and the range of modes used to present information, ie media. For many years genres in written texts have been used, and critiqued, for educational purposes in the teaching and learning of written texts. However little work has focused on multimodal genres or genres within hypermedia. This paper will explore whether the concept of genre can be used in the analysis and deconstruction of hypermedia, such as CDROM programs. It will also consider the representations of genres within hypermedia. Two CDROM programs will be used as examples - ENCARTA'96 and The Way Things Work V2.
