Students' Perceptions of Leader's Roles and Tasks during Collaborative Learning Activities:
Impact on the Design of Online Collaborative Learning Environments

Abstract

This paper presents research on leadership issues in text-based online group interaction in Higher Education. The qualitative part of the research was conducted using a grounded theory approach. The paper discusses student's perceptions of roles and strategies adopted by emergent leaders during online group interaction. The findings of this qualitative research are then applied to practice and discussed in terms of design and delivery of online collaborative learning. An heuristic to address leadership issues is then proposed as a result of this reflection. Finally, this paper attempts to bridged theory into practice by discussing the implications of the research findings for the design, development and delivery of on-line learning environments.
