An Experiment in Translation between Visual, Written, and Verbal text in a Women's Prison: Building The House of Bernada Alba

Abstract:

This paper will focus on my experience as an art educator in Holloway HMP in London during a residency/collaboration with Deidre Osborn and a theatre company. Primarily I will focus on the experience of translating written text into visual and verbal interpretations in order to produce Federico Garcia Lorca's play, The House of Bernada Alba. Within this translation were struggles with the social metaphor of the prison and the personal experiences of the women as prisoners, women, mothers, and daughters. Issues relating to literacy, both written and visual will also be analyzed through my experiences as an educator and artist and the responses of the women who participated.
