Providing Culturally Sensitive Teaching, Learning and Assessment
through Collaboration between Teachers,Parents Children and the Community

Abstract

This paper will explore the opportunities that collaboration provides for developing teaching, learning and assessment strategies that support cultural diversity within the classroom. The results of a study on the assessment practices used with children in kindergarten and the first year of school in Victoria, Australia will be used to examine the ways in which teachers consider cultural and ethnic issues.
The collaboration between teachers and children, teachers and parents, and teachers, parents, children and the community will be outlined to explore the elements of shared decision making that may lead to culturally responsive teaching, learning and assessment practices.
