Teaching New Teachers: The Use of Critical Thinking in Performance Assessment

Abstract

Many colleges of education are seeking methods to help their students pass high stakes tests for teacher certification. This session will address the development of and demonstrate a program that has helped university students to pass state-mandated teacher certification tests for professional development through critical thinking processes. The workshop will focus on three important questions·"What is critical thinking?", "How can we promote critical thinking in our students?", and "What are the qualities of students that have critical thinking skills?". Six important factors of critical thinking will be addressed and linked to direct instruction for student success.

Participants will use a reflective approach in gaining an understanding of the process, product, and performance that students are required to render in a portfolio.
