To the Faithful Departed - Transference of Literacies Form the Past to the Future

Abstract:

This paper and multi-media presentation will show how Information and Communication Technologies are assisting Indigenous students in remote communities in central Australia to successfully gain multi-literacies.

At the same time these Indigenous students are enculturating themselves into many cultures from a world increasingly fracturing into many cultures or tribes. The Indigenous students' own cultures are evolving and challenging them to incorporate new beliefs, new cultures and new ideas as they seek to make sense of an increasingly hostile world.

Providing a brief historical and up-to-date overview of how, using Indigenous knowledge and emerging technologies has enabled the future literacies to be informed by the past. The many cultures and literacies taken up by Indigenous students and the stories left by those who have departed contain lessons for all educators.
