Music: An Old Discipline and a New 'basic'
Since the time of Plato, music has been considered
a necessary discipline in schools. Research in the last decade
supports the importance of music in child development and life
long learning today. This paper will provide recent research
suggesting that performance and listening skills in music help
the new 'basics': cognitive development, self-discipline, self-concept,
social interaction, positive attitude towards school, values,
personal enjoyment, assuagement, and work skills. Teachers and
students are quoted from recent qualitative Canadian research
of student needs in music that support this discipline. Sandra Reid is a concerned parent with over thirty years experience teaching classroom, vocal music, and instrumental music. Currently teaching music in the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University, Ontario, Canada, her book, "How to develop your child's gifts and talents in music" is to be released this fall.
