Music: An Old Discipline and a New 'basic'

Abstract

Since the time of Plato, music has been considered a necessary discipline in schools. Research in the last decade supports the importance of music in child development and life long learning today. This paper will provide recent research suggesting that performance and listening skills in music help the new 'basics': cognitive development, self-discipline, self-concept, social interaction, positive attitude towards school, values, personal enjoyment, assuagement, and work skills. Teachers and students are quoted from recent qualitative Canadian research of student needs in music that support this discipline.

"Even ahead of everything is the need to belong to something, to be in a co-operative environment. Music is an equal jumping off point for just about everybody - it is a chance for everyone to succeed". (Student BC4)
