Transcending the Physical - Exploring Learning and Teaching Partnerships with Flexible / Distance Students

Abstract

'Transcending the physical - exploring learning and teaching partnerships with flexible / distance students', reflects on development, implementation and monitoring of appropriate teaching and learning partnership strategies in order to maximise learning outcomes for flexible / distance students. Flexible / distance students, many of whom are from recognised equity groups (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, rural and isolated, low SES), comprise a large percentage of current tertiary students. Some of the strategies adopted to ensure continued participation and success for these students, include on-line delivery, electronic discussion groups, teleconferencing, weekend workshops, off campus workshops, regional visits and newsletters - in addition to conventional print based materials.

Correlations are made between student (and academic staff) success and satisfaction, and strategies adopted. Conclusions are drawn in relation to access, equity students, learning styles and on-going viability.
