Learning Teamwork Skills: How, When, and Where?

Abstract:

Successful individuals in business and educational settings are those who know their job expectations, have skills in these areas, and are motivated to achieve organizational goals. Employees typically perform at the individual and team levels in organizations. Regarding individual and team skills, how, when, and where do employees obtain them? Abilities associated with individual performance are acquired through formal and informal educational/learning experiences. Abilities linked with working in teams, although often included in university coursework, are more difficult to teach in classrooms. Hence, these skills are left for informal and on-the-job learning. One challenge for higher education is to be involved with lifelong workplace learning opportunities for teams rather than just individuals. This presentation covers an innovative in-service learning approach for teams in business and educational settings that has been developed at a university. Key features to be discussed include content and process issues associated with the training materials.
