The Effect of Web-enhanced Instruction on the Information
Literacy and Self-efficacy of Beginning Undergraduates
Abstract:
The transition from school to university is influenced by
a complex array of factors; one of the contributing factors in
the problems of transition - the academic gap between pre-university
and university education - is a gap in information literacy:
most students do not arrive at university with the information
skills necessary to perform learning and assessment tasks. Universities
are attempting to deal with the problems of transition using
various methods; many offer courses in information literacy education
for beginning undergraduates using a range of strategies such
as stand alone courses, self access websites and library instruction
classes. This paper reports the findings of research in using
web-enhanced instruction to supplement traditional face-to-face
teaching in a course in information literacy for beginning undergraduates,
and the effect of the mode of delivery on the learning, self-efficacy
and transition of various age groups and learning styles within
the group.
