Juggling Multiple Identities: Maximising the Learning Experiences of Remote Indigenous Soldiers

Abstract

Unstable political environments in the Asia Pacific rim and difficulties with illegal entry have highlighted Australia's need to protect its northern borders. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has acknowledged the resource that exists in remote Indigenous communities and is exploring a range of strategies to use indigenous people to assist with surveillance of Australia's inhospitable northern coastline.

This paper draws on data gathered by The Learning Workshop in a Training Needs Analysis commissioned by the ADF to explore issues that may facilitate the increased use of Indigenous people in the Army Reserves. The ADF has waived normal educational entry requirements to foster increased Indigenous representation but is concerned that there has been no significant increase in Indigenous Reservist soldiers progressing through the ADF career path. They believe that literacy is a key component in this lack of progression.

This paper explores some of the challenges for Indigenous Reservist Soldiers, the Australian Defence Force and language and literacy providers in creating and maintaining authentic cultural learning linkages that provide all parties with the opportunity to maximise contrasting skill sets. The authors argue that such an approach requires all stakeholders to look beyond quick fix deficit orientated literacy programs to the development of long term partnerships.
