Boys will be Boys Implications of Students' Perceptions of their Learning Environment

Abstract

The research shows there are significant gender differences in attitude toward school, school rules, teachers, learning environments, school subjects and teaching-learning practices. A study of over 3 000 primary school students suggests these gender differences are evident and significant from age 11 and they appear to intensify through to the high school years, reinforcing conventional gender stereotypes.

The implications for learning are clear: more of the same is no longer really acceptable, teachers need to be more aware of the social dynamics and differences in their classroom/s and they need to be pro-active in meeting the needs of their learners.
