The Future of the Past: Oral and Visual Literacy and the New Zealand Curriculum
This paper will explore aspects of past practice
and belief and how relevant these are to the future, New Zealand
Curriculum guidelines will be examined in relation to best practice,
Oral and visual texts will be discussed, as will the blurring
of the boundaries between written and visual text with examples
from picture books and graphic novels. Issues of cultural inclusion,
authenticity, censorship and intertextuality will be related
to selected texts and to popular culture. Barbara Matthews BA(Hons) MA (Hons) Diploma of Second Language Tchg Barbara Matthews is a senior lecturer at the Auckland College of Education working in the language area of Primary (Elementary) Teacher Education. She has worked in a range of educational roles and settings in New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Her professional interests are oracy and visual literacy and the teaching of English as an additional Language. Her masters degree is in Applied Linguistics.
