What Constitutes Effective Professional Development for Literacy Teachers?

Abstract:

This paper outlines an evaluation of a 2 year professional development program that was provided for literacy teachers in South Australia. The program was structured in ways that maximised opportunities for teachers to learn and was shown to be very successful. In addition to demonstrating positive outcomes the evaluative research highlighted a number of factors that impact on the effectiveness of teacher learning. This paper reports these findings and recommends a set of guiding principles that should be incorporated into all professional development programs for teachers if teacher learning is to be maximised.
