The Effectiveness of Using Literary Schematic Model to Teach Literary Based Materials

Abstract

This paper is based on an experimental study which aims to ascertain the effectiveness of utilising a literary schematic model (developed by the researcher) to teach reading comprehension of literary- based texts in teaching of Malay Language. The subjects consisted of 306 Form IV students. The researcher investigated whether the literary schema induced to the Experimental Group enhanced the subjects' comprehension of different types of excerpts (short stories, classical prose, local and foreign novels) and whether the induced schema assisted them in answering explicit and implicit questions from the excerpts mentioned earlier. This study has produced some significant findings. Firstly, it indicates that the induced literary schema has significantly enhanced the Experimental subjects' overall comprehension achievements for all the excerpts. It also improves the subjects' comprehension of explicit and implicit questions. This study shows that the researcher's literary schematic model is effective and could be utilised by teachers to enhance students' reading comprehension of literary-based texts.
