A Constructivist Approach to Mirror Learning On-the-job
Using WebCT and Interactive Web Technologies

Abstract

This paper will present and discuss the design and implementation of web-based interactive technologies to mirror learning on-the-job in an interactive paperless class "INM3210 Systems Analysis and Design" at the University of Minnesota Crookston. The presentation will include a live demo of the web-based course and its interactive technologies used to implement job-related simulations, providing students with real world experience. The course was redesigned using a constructivist-leaning model. Complete task analysis was performed on all learning outcomes to reflect the constructivist-leaning model. Presentation content was kept to the minimum amount necessary for students to understand how to do their assignments and projects. 80% of the course content are interactive self-learning, self-reviewing, and self-testing web-based applications. WebCT is used as the sole learning interface where a host of other technologies were incorporated (Toolbook, Flash, VISIO, PowerPoint, etc)

Digital videos of 13 actual system project topics were posted at the class WebCT site. Two interactive applications were developed as job aids to help students automate the documentation of system requirements. 15 more interactive web applications were developed to help students self-learn some complex or mundane topics. An interactive "Knowledge Millionaire" web learning game was created to help students review some 150 terms and concepts in the profession to prepare for midterm and final exams.
