Web Algebra Tutor: A Web-based AI-enabled Interactive Learning Environment in Algebra

Abstract

The Web enables access any time, anywhere. It would thus be very helpful if there are tutors residing on the Web who could give guides and support to students whenever they need them for doing homework. Web Algebra Tutor, originally an intelligent tutoring system that runs on stand-alone computers, now migrates to the Web to turn this on-line homework tutorial concept into realization. The system contains a database of different sets of algebra problems from which learners can choose what to practice. When a learner is solving a problem, the system diagnoses in the meantime every step he/she does, and prompts and guides him/her back to the correct solution path as long as errors are detected. The tutoring process is enabled by artificial intelligence techniques and the system can therefore provide 24-hour assistance to learners. Besides giving on-line tutorials, the system could also build up a database of learners' errors in the process of diagnosis and this can be a very useful resource for understanding learner deficits. This paper will show you the design of the system as well as the analysis results of the data collected during the last few months.
