The Adoption of Internet at Work: The Case of Greek Engineers

Abstract:

The Internet has become an essential tool not only for scientists but also for professionals in most fields. The way and speed with which each professional group adopts Internet Information Services varies according to its social, economic and vocational characteristics, in combination with other factors (level of national economy, available technology, existing policies, etc.).

The paper will present the main theories concerning the adoption of Internet Information Services, it will discuss their consequences, and it will provide the findings of a relevant survey on engineers.

The survey is based on the main theories of Media, as well as the theory of innovation adoption (Rogers, etc.).

The professional group of engineers displays high levels of communication activity. They have to communicate constantly with various sources for gathering necessary information. They process that information, utilize it in their professional activity, and diffuse it in their work environment. For that reason, the study of their behavior regarding the new information and communication technologies contributes to the comprehension of the procedure of utilizing new technologies at work
