Reconsidering the Constitution of School Historical Knowledge:
The Greek History Schoolbooks as Texts of National Identity

Abstract

By considering knowledge and identity as constituted through textual/social practices, I attempt to read the Greek history schoolbooks as products both of their authors' rhetorical fact-construction strategies, especially that of narrative, and of the tradition of argumentation of the historical representation of the Greek nation. Adopting this reading position leads to a reconsideration of the history curriculum and to a need for creating alternatives for history teaching. Critical historical literacy could be one of them, putting an emphasis on a combination of history and language teaching and aiming at a reflexive teaching and learning, where historical knowledge and identity are constantly under negotiation.
