Working and Learning through the Literacy Barrier
Abstract
Is there hope for those at risk students with literacy problems
who do not complete their secondary education? This paper reports
on data collected for a work in progress. It reflects on the
way nine men, self-reporting literacy difficulties, from two
Australian cities found ways to improve and use literacy at work.
Although not a fairy tale, their experiences have direct implications
teachers and education authorities in their response to those
who demonstrate difficulties in gaining literacy.
Bionote
As a teacher, Marilyn has worked with learning difficulties
students of all ages for twenty years. She has returned to the
role of a full time student in order to investigate the literacy
acquisition of workers with learning difficulties. Having consulted
with teachers in Sweden, Malaysia and Russia as well as Australia
she finds the learners experience universal and surmises that
the solutions are as well.
