The Plan is Mightier than the Rod:
Teacher Trainees' Characterization of Literacy and Values Education

Abstract

A primary role of the teacher training institution lies in the construction of trainees' instructional knowledge, that is, in the shaping, guiding and modelling of behavior that will constitute best practice for the classroom. However, while the teacher educator strives to provide a practical foundation for the achievement of learning school-based skills and understanding challenges in the workplace, these initiatives are often redefined in the classroom. This paper will outline the findings of a study focused on trainees' perceived areas of importance with regards to literacy development and values education. The trainees' lesson plans created during the practicum provided insights into their personal and instructional "worlds" and demonstrated how component resource areas such as personal beliefs, past experiences as learners, supervisors' expectations and contextual constraints served to provide a framework for pre-active and interactive decision making. The paper will conclude with a discussion on terlevel plans: a knowledge-based plan, an instructional or curriculum-based plan and a knowledge construction plan.
