Holistic/Integrated Education:
Teachers' Understanding of the Concept of Holistic/Integrated
Education in Malaysia
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' understanding
of the holistic/integrated education concept of the Malaysian
Secondary School Integrated Curriculum which encompasses aspects
of integration such as integration of knowledge, skills and values
in learning; integration of theory and practice and integration
of experience and effects of both learning form inside and outside
of classrooms. The sample consists of secondary school teachers
involved in the teaching of subjects under the Integrated Secondary
School Curriculum randomly selected from four states representing
the northern, middle, eastern and southern zones of West Malaysia.
Data was collected via questionnaire developed by the researcher.
Findings of the study showed that the teachers' understanding
of these aspects of integration is high. However, results also
showed that there exist significant differences in the understanding
of various aspects of integration among teachers of different
race, religion and areas of specialization on concepts of integration
covering values, skills and knowledge which are inherently related
to the concepts of God/Creator and a well-balanced individual
to be achieved through holistic education.
