Bringing back Humanity: The Role of Poetry in Language Education
Abstract An investigation into a dozen or so widely used textbooks, course materials and multimedia resources, as well as those on CD-ROM and the internet, reveals a rather paradoxical English language teaching/learning scenario in many parts of the world, including Hong Kong and Macao. While poetry proves to be the No.1 instinctive favourite with children and students who prefer poetry to other genres for various activities, poetry has been absent from language curricula and classrooms. Maintaining that poetry not only plays a vital part in language teaching and learning but also brings back humanity, this paper stresses the roles of poetry in language education and suggests ways of exploiting poetry to enliven, enrich and innovate learning and teaching both inside and outside the classroom.
