A Win-Win Model for Lifelong Learning in Retirement
Abstract This model is based on a retired adult's continuing adventure in lifelong learning as a volunteer aide at a university while attending classes. Universities might consider actively recruiting retired adults as volunteer aides for busy professors, as this can be a win-win relationship for both the University and the aide. Specific advantages for the volunteer, for the University, and for society, are presented. Emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical health benefits are discussed in relationship to the aging population and to society as a whole. This model includes the opportunity for younger students to see and interact with productive, older adults, who serve as role models of successful aging. Feedback from those currently involved in such a process is reported, including comments from students and professors. Added to this model is a brief overview of what is being done at other Universities in the US and other parts of the world. Bionotes Judy Higbee is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education in the College of Education at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. She has research interests related to aging, stress, measurement of physical activity, and authentic assessment. Wanda Hewes is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, retired, 80 years of age, and a life-long learner and adventurer.
