Learning Through Effective Teaching: Research Studies in Physical Education

Abstract

Research studies on effective teaching have tended to consider the more traditional school subject areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics. As a result most research studies have been conducted in the school classroom environment. Very few studies have considered effective teaching in environmental areas for learning that occur outside of the classroom. As a result, there are only a limited number of studies that have considered effective teaching in environments such as the gymnasium, sports field, or swimming pool for example. Consequently, few studies have considered effective teaching and physical education. This paper synthesizes the research findings on effective teaching in physical education. Based on this synthesis implications for teaching practice are presented and ideas are forwarded to offer possible ways to enhance student learning in this particular subject area. Finally, directions for future research studies into effective teaching are forwarded.
