New South Wales, Australia The Young Gifted Child and The Search For Complexity and Connection
Young gifted children although a diverse group within the population, demonstrate a number of distinctive characteristics particularly in the intellectual and emotional domains. In this presentation the nature of giftedness will be explored. This discussion will be illustrated with data from a multiple case study undertaken in Sydney, Australia. Examples of conversations, drawings and work samples from this study highlight the young gifted child's search for complexity. Examples of play behaviour and social interaction from the study also highlight the young gifted child's search for a connection with others. The need for social connection can be problematic for the young gifted child when opportunities to meet like minded peers may be a rarity. The presentation will conclude with a brief consideration of the implications for pedagogy and practice which have emerged from this study. Bionote Cathie Harrison is a lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Western Sydney, Australia. Mary Sherwood is formerly a lecturer in early childhood education at UWS but is now Special Need Subsidy Scheme Training and Resource Office New Child Care Inclusion Support Services. Mary and Cathie have worked together exploring theoretical perspectives and practical implications of reflective practice for programming and planning in early childhood settings. This work has culminated in the production of a video entitled Reflective Practice in Action: Finding another way.
