Lifelong Learning: Engaging the EQ
Abstract From Aristotle to Rousseau, alongside mass illiteracy, emotional intelligence (EQ) has been critical and central to learning. Great orators, playwrights, leaders have demonstrated high EQ throughout the ages and within their achievements. Wherever lifelong learning is openly discussed and encouraged, the role of EQ must be recognised. This paper will discuss the role of EQ in the contemporary context. More specifically it will highlight implications for education and for schooling as we move through the new millennium. Data for this research were drawn from interviews and questionnaires, from primary, secondary and tertiary education students in NSW, Australia. Bionote Janice Hall is a teacher, consultant and lecturer in education. She currently works in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Her research interests include teaching pedagogy, education of gifted and accelerated learners and teacher education reform. Her current research is with beginning teachers of accelerated learners in disadvantaged socio-economic areas.
