Weaving Meaning in our Lives Through Story
Abstract Story telling has historically given definition and meaning to our lives and experiences, providing timeless paradigms of human life. Stories illustrate moral crises, promote understanding, communicate new values and create awareness of others having similar problems and provide realistic solutions and guidance. This presentation provides a framework of using story and literature across the lifespan, providing themes, objectives and criteria for selection of books, stories, web based information and video materials. Literature provides for broad exposure, life long learning for children to young adult to the oldest old. Story telling and literature allows for participant learning, frequently used in self-help and empowerment models. It provides the ability to promote understanding of culture, heritage, and spirituality both from perspectives of similarities and differences. This paper addresses the development of pedagogical skills as well as clinical application for practice. Interactive presentation with suggestions for activities and exercises to expand and promote discussion.
