A Model for Developing On-line Web Based Instructional Materials

Abstract

The job of university academics today is changing as more of the units that they teach / facilitate are required to be delivered in an on-line mode. This paper will explore some of the issues that academics have to face in creating such web based instructional materials together with the practicalities of running an on-line unit. Many issues will be discussed in the paper however some of them include: making use of an e-learning management tool such as Web CT or using a 'standard' Web server; getting a site up and running in a cost effective manner; selecting an appropriate bulletin board service; choosing between a linear or threaded type of bulletin board; selecting an appropriate Listserver service; running an on-line unit in parallel for both campus based students and off-shore or 'distance' students. The paper will finally describe a model that has been developed by the author and that is now being used for several on-line units at Edith Cowan University.
