Student's Personal Traits and Effectiveness of Computer-Mediated Communication in Learning

Abstract:

In the research field of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in learning, technological aspects has been discussed intensively. But in order to make CMC learning effective, cognitive and affective aspects of students also should be focused on. Are students' cognitive and affective responses in CMC different from those in face-to-face communication (FFC)? If the answer is yes, how and why? To answer these questions, we examine the interaction between the effectiveness of CMC and students' personal traits in undergraduate course. The results suggest the following points:

1) One of the most critical factors is copresence (copresent/non-copresent) with others.

2) The effect of copresence depends on students' personal traits.

Some students report that they can express their thoughts through e-mail, and that they cannot express through FFC. It suggests the possibility that troubles students feel in FFC can be compensated by CMC. We emphasize that CMC can not only compensate the spatial and temporal gap, but also resolve the problem of stress in FFC which is caused by psychological gap.
