Some Considerations on the Future of Non-Residential
Abstract Higher Education is a vitally important activity in any modern society. The new learning environment, which includes distance learning, is forcing a reconsideration of Private Higher Educational Institutions (PHEIs) in Africa. Distance learning is not a panacea for all education problems, but it holds great promise for driving change in PHEIs. Although the landscape of distance learning in Africa is changing rapidly, there are still developments that proceed unevenly across the African Continent. Distance learning, incorporating a judicious use of new information and communication technologies, is becoming increasingly available in Africa, thus providing the continent with improved learning opportunities. This paper addresses the need for African countries to craft a new approach towards the establishment of a culture of distance learning in a global environment. Some of the considerations impacting on the future of Private Higher Educational Distance Learning in the African Continent are also emphasised. Bionotes Liezle Froneman is actively involved in a wide range of academic activities. She is programme manager for a private college where she has implemented five B Com-programmes. She is also a part-time lecturer for a number of other private and public institutions. She is currently doing a D Com at RAU. He subsequently joined the Rand Afrikaans University, where he is now Professor in Business Management.
